Miasma is a faint, octarine-colored gas that covers the world of Konal. It is known to kill both plant and animal life and mostly hovers near the surface, although clouds of miasma dot the sky. The cities of the world are protected by magical barriers keeping the miasma out. Miasma is also known colloquially as murk.
Any creature who breathes in miasma gets murk poisoning. A creature with murk poisoning gets an octarine tint to their eye and starts coughing blood after 1d3 days. Within a week, that creature dies. A creature need only be exposed once for murk poisoning to take hold, and there is no known cure. Magic such as remove poison and remove disease have proven ineffective.
It is unknown how the barriers were erected without the people within being previously exposed to the miasma. Some scholars theorize that the barriers were created for another purpose and simply remained active. Others believe the miasma accumulated slowly, and there was time for powerful mages to react. Still others believe humanoids released the miasma on the world for a purpose long since forgotten.
